German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder pays tribute to Douglas Sirk’s 1955 melodrama All That Heaven Allows in this contemporary reimagining set in 1970s West Germany. The film follows a lonely widow and a younger Moroccan immigrant who fall in love, much to the surprise—and disapproval—of their families, friends and colleagues. Fassbinder blends the emotional intensity of classic Hollywood melodrama with a sharp examination of racial prejudice and social tensions in German society at the time. In German and Arabic w/ subtitles.
