This landmark silent film has been noted as being the first feature-length horror-comedy. Set in a decrepit mansion, a family gathers to hear the reading of a wealthy patriarch’s will when a deranged lunatic known as “the Cat” holes up in the house and begins slowly killing off the greedy inhabitants. The film that kickstarted Universal’s horror blueprint throughout the 1930s. THE CAT AND THE CANARY is a spine-chilling gothic whodunit with dark humor and memorable imagery courtesy of German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni. Silent w/ live accompaniment.
