Charles Vidor (Gilda) directs this enthralling MGM musical-drama chronicling nightclub singer Ruth Etting’s rise to fame in 1920s Chicago. Cagney is predictably great as Etting’s crude gangster-turned-manager Martin “the Gimp” Snyder and Doris Day gets the rare opportunity to show off her superb dramatic acting skills as Etting. Robert Osborne once called this film Doris Day’s “piece de resistance“ and remarked that it is possibly the best film she ever made.
