Mississippi Masala

19911 hr 58 minR

Introduced by Rachael Z. DeLue, director of the Princeton Humanities Initiative, and Christopher Binyon Sarofim ’86 Professor in American Art in the Department of Art & Archaeology and the Effron Center for the Study of America.

Mira Nair’s luminous drama blends the cultures of India, Uganda and the American South into a vibrant exploration of love in a modern melting pot. Years after her Indian family is forced to flee Uganda, Mina (Sarita Choudhury) helps run a motel in Mississippi, where she begins a passionate romance with Demetrius (Denzel Washington), a charming Black carpet cleaner. As their relationship challenges family expectations and exposes deep cultural divides, MISSISSIPPI MASALA thoughtfully explores racism, colorism and the transformative power of love.

This partnered screening is part of the Re-visioning America Film Series, featuring directors who explore what it means to be an American. Co-sponsored by Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton University’s Humanities Initiative, Art Against Racism and the Princeton Garden Theatre.
